A visit to the Black Forest has to include a visit to Freiburg. Freiburg is located at the Dreisam river and has been a college city for 500 years. The cathedral with its 116 metres high tower, which is called "the most beautiful tower of Christendom" is the landmark of the city. Starting from Freiburg you can reach a narrow valley, the main connection between Freiburg and Donaueschingen. This valley is called Höllental. At its narrowest point there is the Hirschsprung. According to a legend a deer jumped over this canyon to escape from the hunters. A deer placed on the rock still reminds us of this legend. The Schauinsland is Freiburg's Hausberg. A rope railway leads to its peak in an altitude of 1284 metres.
